Now let's learn more about River!
Why did you become a personal trainer? What do you love most about the job?
I became a personal trainer because I have a passion for helping others to get in the best shape of their lives, both physically and mentally. I became interested in exercise science and learning more about health and fitness, and that contributed to my goal to become a personal trainer as well. What I love most about being a personal trainer is seeing the transformations with everyone I work with. I love to see the improvements in physical health, mental health, confidence, and overall quality of life.
Do you have a specialty or some other aspect of your education that you’re exceptional at?
I have my Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology with a focus in human performance. I became a NASM certified personal trainer in 2017. I specialize in helping my clients with fat loss, building muscle, and getting stronger.
What is the biggest misconception about personal training, in your opinion?
In my opinion, the biggest misconception about personal training is that many view it as a trainer just telling them what to do for each workout and that’s it. I think this misconception may lead some to thinking they can figure it all out on their own without help. As a personal trainer, I not only create custom workout plans for each of my clients based on their goals and needs, but I also teach them how to perform various exercises correctly. Essentially, I educate my clients on why they're doing what they’re doing. I set them up for life long success so they can continue to move forward after we’re done working together.
What is the one statement you wish everyone would know about fitness?
The one statement I wish everyone knew about fitness is that fitness adds to the quality of your life in many areas. Over time staying consistent with fitness can increase your discipline inside and outside of the gym, improved mental clarity, better work ethic, more energy throughout the day, better mood, better relationship with yourself and others, and greater confidence.
Time for some free advice. What is your top tip for any of the following: losing weight, staying in shape, improving ability, building muscle, etc.?
My top tip for anyone who wants to lose weight, maintain their shape, improve abilities, or build muscle is to stay consistent with they’re routine, nutrition, and recovery for an extended period of time. One of the most important, if not the most important factor is consistency when it comes to achieving any health or fitness goal. When it comes to any fitness or health related goal, think long term rather than short term. Form habits that align with your goals that you can adhere to consistently for several months, years, and potentially for life. When it comes to health and fitness you have to realistically find out what works for you and stay consistent with it. Fitness should add to the quality of your life, not take away from it!
